WHSP Summer 2013 Proves a Great Success!

The Women's Health Science program just completed our summer academies introducing 48 young women from Chicago schools to careers in scientific research and medicine.  The two academies, The Infectious Disease Summer Academy and the Oncofertility Summer Academy, each spent one week on the Northwestern Medical School Campus learning from current scientists, clinicians, graduate researchers, and medical students.  To date, 180 students have participated in the Women's Health Science Program since its inception in 2007.  WHSP students have a 100% high school graduation rate, and all of our high school graduates have continued onto college, with 80% actively pursuing science majors.  We are so proud of the 2013 WHSP Summer young women, and we cannot wait to see all the successes they are bound to accomplish!

Another successful alumnae event!

In spite of the sleet and snow on December 20, 2012, this year's Women's Health Science Program alumnae event was a blast! Those who were tough enough to brave the elements were treated to two incredible workshops by Northwestern University staff members Kamilah McCoy and A. Francisco Castelan.

Kamilah McCoy led our Resume & Cover Letter Writing Workshop. As the associate director for career services at Northwestern University, she specializes in career advising, outreach and programs for graduate students. To fully benefit from her expertise, some workshop attendees came prepared with their resumes. The notes from her workshop can be found under "Resources" below, so be sure to take a look advantage of her great advice!

A. Francisco Castelan led our Preparing for Medical/Health Careers Workshop. As the Assistant Director and Health Professions Advisor at the Northwestern University Academic Advising Center, he specializes in advising undergraduate students who are interested in health and medical careers. He gave our alumnae some helpful ideas for achieving their future goals. The notes from his presentation, entitled "Mentoring: The Key to Success in a Healthcare Career," can be found under "Resources" below.

After our workshops, we took a break to mingle and snack, and Dr. Woodruff came down to join the fun. We then spent an hour playing games and sharing memories, before we all had to say goodbye and go our separate ways. All in all, we had a wonderful time! Staying in touch and continuing to support one another is so important for all our science sisters, and we look forward to next year's event!

OSA moved to summer 2013

This year's Oncofertility Saturday Academy will be a bit of misnomer, as it's moving out of the bitter cold Chicago winter and into summer 2013. The bad news is that we will miss being with our new OSA recruits during the winter season. The good news is that this move to the summer may allow more of our OSA alumnae to volunteer as mentors! The exact dates and times are still TBD, but we will keep you posted!

2013 Alumnae Event

We had a successful WHSP Summer 2013 Alumnae Event. Thanks to a gift from a generous donor, we had the money to organize a field trip to the incredible Chicago Botanic Garden. There, we received a guided tour of the gardens and got a sneak peak at the science lab, where Northwestern University faculty work.  We finished the day with food and games! Megan and Samantha, your alumnae board co-chairs, planned the details and coordinated a lovely event! Stay tuned for another alumnae event this winter!

"Fund Your Future"- College Financial Planning Session" - February 28, 2013

WHSP alumna Nicole Miles brought this great event to our attention.  The Heartland Institute of Financial Education, whose goal is to help young Americans obtain a college education, is offering an information session to let students (and parents) find out more about how to position yourself to qualify for grants, student loans and scholarships.  Additional details can be seen HERE, on the flyer.  If you have questions, email Nicole Miles at
